Giveaway Winner Announced!

Well not as big of a turnout for my Salt Sugar Fat giveaway as for the recipe and exercise books the past 2 years, but that’s okay, I can appreciated that reading about Big Food is not something everyone is interested in. Thank you all for reading my blog though!

Drum roll please…Here’s the winner:

Doc1Congratulations Nettie! I’ll be in touch soon to send you your prize!

Happy 3 Year Blogiversary to Me and a Giveaway!

Happy 3 Year Blogiversary to me!

Here we are….(ok, fine…technically July 31st!)…three years later and I’m still blogging about my weight loss journey. Maybe that’s the most important word there…JOURNEY. Oh there have been ups and downs, easy weeks and difficult months. My journey is definitely not over…I would still like to lose about 20lbs to reach my goal weight, but you know what? I think I’ve come a pretty long way in the last 3 years. Here I am – almost 100lbs lighter, I exercise regularly, and even though I struggle, I eat WAY better than I did years ago. So I know I’ve made progress, but sometimes I lose sight of just how much better off I am, how much healthier I am, than I was when I started.

I began this blog as a way to stay accountable – there’s something about posting my weigh-ins every week that does help me. Sometimes it’s harder than I want to admit to post and sometimes I can’t wait to share with you all my news. But in the end here I am…plodding along. Learning as I go. I wanted to thank you all for sticking with me through these years, readers who have been with me since the beginning and new readers. Thank you so much!

I mentioned before that I was reading the book Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss all about Big Food and how processed food has become ubiquitous in our modern life. I’m still halfway through the book, but I’m enjoying it immensely. And, if you’ve been following my blog you know I enjoy reading about eating/food, exercise, and the connections to obesity and weight loss and maintenance. And so to celebrate my 3rd Year Blogiversary and to thank you all for sticking with me I’m going to give away a copy of the book!

Sunday Video Sharing – Normalizing the Abnormal

I watched this video this weekend from one of my favourite blogs – Weighty Matters by Dr. Yoni Freedhoff. This is a speech he presented on normalizing the abnormal i.e. processed food and junk food. It’s a great little video about how ubiquitous fast food and convenience food has become. Check it out (about 17 mins long):

It goes hand in hand with my current reading – Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss. I’ll post a full review of it when I’m done, but in the meanwhile check out some articles about it I found useful from Maclean’s, The Toronto Star, and the New York Times.

Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day everyone!

Things seem to be turning up this week, but I guess we’ll see tomorrow on the scale (as long as I don’t blow it today!! I do have a bbq today) I made these cookies for work – shortbread cut-outs – and only 3 points per cookie (2 for the cookie and 1 for the icing) using this shortbread recipe here on Sweetopia. Be sure to double-check the points based on how many cookies you make. I halved the recipe and with my cutter I they came out 2 points each.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate!  May this coming year be filled with joy and love for you all.

No weigh-in today, but I will on Thursday – here’s hoping the week hasn’t been too disastrous scale-wise, and even if it has – I can and will get back on track. The important part is time spent with family, friends, and loved ones.

To go with my baking obsession, check  out this fabulous gingerbread house version of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Now this is an xmas project!

Christmas…and the decorations…have arrived!

I won’t lie. I’ve been decorating…I’ve been decorating a lot. It bring a little joy into my life. I love xmas and xmas decorations.

These are chocolate truffles I made for my holiday dinner:

This is my little tree! It’s about 3′ tall! I found a tall terracotta pot it could fit into and put a water container inside. Voila! No tree stand needed (it’s too small for one anyways)

I like to collect ornaments from friends or places I’ve been. This is a homemade monkey made by a friend for me a couple years ago.

A Dalí clock! I LOVE all things Dalí. Also, see the gondola in the lower left? That’s from my trip to Banff, Alberta this summer.

Glass mushroom ornament from a Polish fair I went to a few weeks ago. I love toadstools!

My xmas moose! I loves him.

Close up of my “mantle” decor. I don’t have a mantle. It runs the length of my entertainment unit…which is actually an expedit shelf from Ikea.

Xmas cards and antique bottles

I hang out on the weightwatchers.ca forum and we have an xmas card exchange – I love receiving them all. So inspirational! Some people include inspiration messages, some recipes, some stickers, some photos – all of it motivating and wonderful.

Antique bottles are there year-round.

Decorations scattered about the apartment.

Cute decorations in my grandmother’s tea set on display.

Even the kitchen didn’t escape! I just bought these.

Or the bathroom. Thank you Winners.

And Cinnamon Honey Butter as gifts. I got the recipe here and cute free print-outs for the jars here.
