Giveaway Winner Announced!

Well not as big of a turnout for my Salt Sugar Fat giveaway as for the recipe and exercise books the past 2 years, but that’s okay, I can appreciated that reading about Big Food is not something everyone is interested in. Thank you all for reading my blog though!

Drum roll please…Here’s the winner:

Weight Loss

Weigh-in Week 171: This was a Good Week

Indeed it was. I was down 2.2lbs today at weight in with a new weight of 156.1lbs and a total loss of 95.5lbs. It feels good to be back in control. I will say that I have been doing pretty well so far with the night time eating. I haven’t had a complete out of control eating in a long time. I’ve been eating properly at night and it feels good. Yay!

Also – the giving up Splenda is going fantastically well! I haven’t caved and added it to my coffee or anything. And I’m doing well with getting used to the taste of one teaspoon sugar. Second Yay!

Thirdly – don’t forget to check out my GIVEAWAY! To celebrate my 3 year blogiversary I’m giving away a copy of the book Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss. Enter by leaving me a comment on the Giveaway post.

Fourthly – check out what my local grocery store has started doing. It’s a program called Guiding Stars.  The quick introduction to this program as on their website says:

“Guiding Stars is a food rating system that rates food based on nutrient density using a scientific algorithm to assign a 0, 1, 2 or 3 star rating. The program rates foods based on vitamins, minerals, fibre, whole grains, Omega-3s, saturated fat, trans fat, added sodium and added sugar. “

I was happy to see how they rated plain oatmeal vs flavoured oatmeal! Check it out:

Plain Oatmeal: 3 Stars!

Plain Instant Oatmeal: 3 Stars!

Flavoured Oatmeal: 1 Star!

I’m thrilled to see an accurate rating. Sometimes oatmeal has a halo around it, but when you add all that sugar, fake flavours, and dried fruit to it, it’s no better than any other sweetened cereal. Plain oatmeal is the way to go – add your own fruit, nuts, or sugar and make it even better than the store-bought flavours. 🙂

Happy 3 Year Blogiversary to Me and a Giveaway!

Happy 3 Year Blogiversary to me!

Here we are….(ok, fine…technically July 31st!)…three years later and I’m still blogging about my weight loss journey. Maybe that’s the most important word there…JOURNEY. Oh there have been ups and downs, easy weeks and difficult months. My journey is definitely not over…I would still like to lose about 20lbs to reach my goal weight, but you know what? I think I’ve come a pretty long way in the last 3 years. Here I am – almost 100lbs lighter, I exercise regularly, and even though I struggle, I eat WAY better than I did years ago. So I know I’ve made progress, but sometimes I lose sight of just how much better off I am, how much healthier I am, than I was when I started.

I began this blog as a way to stay accountable – there’s something about posting my weigh-ins every week that does help me. Sometimes it’s harder than I want to admit to post and sometimes I can’t wait to share with you all my news. But in the end here I am…plodding along. Learning as I go. I wanted to thank you all for sticking with me through these years, readers who have been with me since the beginning and new readers. Thank you so much!

I mentioned before that I was reading the book Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss all about Big Food and how processed food has become ubiquitous in our modern life. I’m still halfway through the book, but I’m enjoying it immensely. And, if you’ve been following my blog you know I enjoy reading about eating/food, exercise, and the connections to obesity and weight loss and maintenance. And so to celebrate my 3rd Year Blogiversary and to thank you all for sticking with me I’m going to give away a copy of the book!

Weigh-In Week 119: No weigh-in and the insatiable hunger

Don’t forget about my blogiversary giveaway. Leave your comment here for your chance  – it’s on until Friday at 11:59pm Eastern time.

So no weigh-in today. I’ve mentioned before that I do mostly contract work and I got called in last minute in for a possible new job – can’t turn down that opportunity so off I went. To be honest, I’m not distraught over it. I was kinda expecting a gain. I know, I know, I KNOW! That’s the time I should I go for a WI. But I didn’t and here I am. I’m having a fantastically great day so far food and exercise wise! I’ve been on track and tracking everything. Breakfast was oatmeal and coffee, lunch was an avocado and a chicken breast, veggies & fruit for snacks, a 35 minute run (just over 5K at a moderate pace) after work, and a HUGE 3-egg omelette for dinner and all within my daily points. Wow, I haven’t eaten eggs in ages! So good and great source of post-run protein. I’ve forgotten how much better a whole dinner tastes rather than wasting my points on snacking during the day!

I know when I stay within my points  and eat good food I lose. So why is it so difficult sometimes? Why, like this past week, did it feel like my hunger was insatiable. I could have eaten from morning til night and not felt full. What gives body? I know that with weight loss your body starts working against you and increases your hunger to bring your weight back up (if you’re interested you can read about the science here). But come on! It was insane this week. I’d think I had it under control and then…nope! No I didn’t!

Okay, but I’m back on track now which is what matters. I’m also reminded of this little gem going around the facebook interwebs thanks to the awesome George Takei. So yeah, this week might have been a fail, but it’s no reason to give up and to not keep going. Slow and un-steady it might be, but it’s a heck of a lot better than weighing 250lbs I’ll tell you that!

Blogiversary Giveaway! (and I’m on Twitter!)

As promised here it is! My blogiversary giveaway. Last year I gave away my favourite baking cookbook – One Smart Cookie. Which if you love baking, but are trying to keep your food healthy or your fat consumption down you much check it out! No recipe has more than 1/4 cup of butter, but the flavours are wonderful! My favourite is the chocolava cookies and I use her sugar cookie recipe as my stand by.  If you’re interested in her book check it out here: Canada: Chapters/Indigo or USA: Amazon.com.

Well this year my celebratory giveaway is another book (because I like my reading!):

Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights? by Alex Hutchinson, Ph.D. is a fantastic book! I was reading it on my subway commutes in NYC and it was super engaging. If you’re like to know the science behind exercise then this is the book for you. Written in such a way that it super easy to understand for the normal person I thought it had some great information about the science of working out. In general I dislike “health” magazines as they usually just promote trends without talking about the science behind it – why it works, how to do it properly, how often to do it. In this book no only does he do away with some pretty prevalent myths, but also provides some great examples of exercises and how to do them properly. This is a great, easy, and informative read that I highly recommend to anyone interested in knowing whats going on in your body when you work out.

Also – I’ve decided to try my hand at tweeting and now you can find me on Twitter right here: https://twitter.com/pound_per_pound. Follow me and let me know about your account so I can follow you right back!

Weigh-in Week 66 & Giveaway Winner Announced!

Oh sigh. So I was up this weigh-in: up 1.5lbs for a new weight of 172.8lbs and a total loss of 78.8lbs. This always seems to happen when I reach a big weight loss.

I’m not going to kid myself or you – I know EXACTLY why I gained and I completely deserved it. This week’s weight gain has been brought to you by a whole stack of graham crackers eaten late one night, a whole box of crackers devoured, and a weekend of not one proper meal (other than a French toast breakfast) but rather filled with snacking, snacking, and more snacking.

Knowing why I gained doesn’t seem to be helping me I must say. Every week I gained I’ve known exactly why. The why is usually due to a couple mini-binges somewhere along the way. Usually when suddenly I just NEED breads – hence the graham cracker and cracker fiasco of this weekend. At least they were on 2 separate occassions (well technically 3, the box of crackers took two different sittings), although that doesn’t seem to console me right now. I need to find better ways of dealing with the cravings when they overcome me as I clearly cannot yet handle my trigger foods (which happens to be bread and bread products of any sort apparently!)

However, I did reach my exercise goals! I got in 38 activity points. This past week I: ran 5K three times (twice on a treadmill, once outside), did weight training twice, and walked 7K.

But now onto some better news! The winner of my one-year blogiversary giveaway of the One Smart Cookie cookbook!  Thank you everyone!! I think I succeeded a bit in getting the lurkers out – I definitely know my site views spiked over the last few days 🙂

So there were a total of 11 comments and I used a random number generator to get this number:

Which makes Lauriebee our winner with her comment:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I know Lauriebee from the WW forums. How exciting! Here’s hoping this book will help you bake cookies once again that are low in points! It has tons of great ideas for potlucks! 🙂
